RECONSTRUCTION OF C RANIOFACIAL DEFORMITY BY USING VARIOUS TYPE OF AUTOGENOUS CALVA RIAL BONE GRAFTS

Abstract
TTraditional bone donor sources include the rib, ilium and tibia all share some disadvantages such as postoperative pain, limitation of exercise etc. So an alternate donor site with minimal morbidity is desirable. The potential of the calvarium as a bone donor site for craniofacial reconstructive surgery has been recently realized and its many advantages are now recognized.
Thirty one patients received autogenous calvarial bone grafts due to various etiology and follow up at least I month to 18 months at Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Kyung Hee University hospital from May 1986 to July 1988.
The results are as follows;
Calvarial bone as a bone donor site has following advantages
1. A visible scar at the donor site is avoided
2. Appropriate curvature is obtained when the donor site is properly selected.
3. Pain and functional inability are absent
4. Easy to molding for the adjustment to the recipient site
5. Grossly there is no secondary deformity due to bone resorption
In the authors¢¥ experience, calvarial bone grafting is useful technique in restoring craniofacial surface defects.
